Modern mothers can thank the ancient civilisations for Mother's Day
There’s truth in the old saying that a mothers’ work is never done and Mother’s Day is one day in the calendar when mothers should be able to down tools and relax. And although some would claim that EVERY day should be Mother’s Day, the occasion is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate mothers in a special way.
Let's look past any hype and commercialism, and see where the tradition has its origins.
Contrary to some popular opinion, Mother’s Day wasn’t ‘invented’ by a greeting card company as a sales ploy. It is believed to have its roots in ancient times when goddesses were revered in festivals and holidays. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans held spring festivals in celebration of various goddesses including Cybele, Isis and Rhea.
Several Christian denominations, including Anglicans, also have dedicated Mothering Sundays in the liturgical calendar. It is believed that Mothering Sunday originated in the United Kingdom around the 16th century when it was considered important for churchgoers to go back to their ‘mother’ church annually. Many poor children were also sent to wealthy homes in neighbouring villages to work as domestic servants and were only able to see their mothers on their annual visit to the mother church. These children also presented their mothers with flowers they had picked as well as special baked 'mothering' cakes. Today, the giving of flowers for Mother’s day is one of the most popular and special ways of showing appreciation.
The fourth Sunday in Lent also features on the Catholic calendar as a date when the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was revered. This was also a time when other family members assumed responsibility for some tasks that were perceived as traditionally in the female domain such as cooking and cleaning.
Mother's Day in the US is believed to have started with the story of dynamic author, Julia Ward Howe, who was an activist for the cause. In the early 1900s, another activist, Anna Jarvis, also campaigned for the recognition of mothers, and her efforts were rewarded by the state of Virginia recognising the 2nd Sunday in May as an official Mother's Day holiday (it was the anniversary of her mother's passing). White carnations, which were her mother’s favourite flowers and which she gave to funeral goers, have become associated with Mother’s Day today.
Mother's Day celebrations around the world take on many different forms and on many different dates. And across all the different countries and cultures, there's a common thread running through them that mothers are given gifts and flowers as a token of love and appreciation.
In the Western world, billions of dollars goes on gifts, flowers and special treats for Mother's Day. And mums aren’t the only the ones smiling on Mother’s Day. Nearly eight percent of the annual revenue of the US jewellery industry is generated over the holiday, and it’s the most popular day for restaurant dining in the US.
Many florists, including Perth florist, Airport Florist, say the day is one of the busiest on their calendar as appreciation for mothers is recognized with a gift of flowers. And while Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days in the year for a whole heap of industries including florists, restaurants, the postal service, internet search engines, telephone companies and retailers, it should be the one day on the calendar when mothers are NOT busy!
