Optical Sights In The US Army And Marine Corps

When the US Army decided to adopt an optical sight it decided upon a red dot reflex sight as its preferred solution. A 1X sight offers the maximum situational awareness and an infantryman's role, even in this day and age, involves a significant amount of close combat. Analysis after the Korean war focused the US Army's attention on short range engagements at which they sought to achieve incapacitation by using large numbers of projectiles to compensate for aiming errors - a philosophy evidenced in the SALVO and SPIW projects. As late as the 1980s, US Army doctrine envisaged infantry engaging Soviet motor riflemen who would disembark from their BTRs and BMPs no closer than 300 meters from the objective. The US Army saw no need to replace the 300/500 meter, non windage adjustable backsight as it served this doctrine well. They replaced the M16A2 with the M4 carbine, giving up some lethality for a more handy package..

The kinds of wars US forces are fighting in now could hardly be more different from those anticipated in the 1980s and the emphasis now is on light infantry, correct target identification and precise engagement with minimum force. The result was a renewed interest in long range rifle shooting which demanded maginifying optical sights. The USMC adopted the flat-topped M16A4 rifle as its standard shoulder arm, but replaced almost all of its M9 sidearms with M4 carbines instead for a quantum leap in capability. The US Army in turn reissued M14 rifles, some with scout rails and others with integrated chassis systems as the Enhanced Battle Rifle. The USMC's position was reinforced by the US Army purchasing M16A4s in large numbers.

The Army first adopted the Aimpoint CompM2 as its M68 close combat optic. The M68 is an extremely strong 2 Minute of Angle red dot sight which offers a single aiming point. The sight is attached to the weapon's Picatinny rail with a conventional ring mount. The M68 proved a great success in service, but almost a decade on the US Army's inventory was up for replacement and a replacement was sought. This time they went for the Aimpoint CompM4S, a CompM4 with its battery housing and brightness adjuster moved to a more protected lower position. The CompM4s has an integral mount to prevent the scope getting canted and a much tougher adjuster knob - a known weak point of the CompM2. The increase in battery life was amazing - a CompM4 or M4s can run continuously for up to 80,000 hours on a day setting and theoretically up to 250,000 set for night vision use! Thus the battery could well last as long as the service life of the sight. Operations in Afghanistan put the emphasis on light weight. To try to get its soldiers burden under control the US Army has issued a quanitity of the tiny (3.7 ounce with mount!) Aimpoint T-1 4 MoA red dot sight with the 3XMag detachable magnifier in Afghanistan. Huge numbers of the CompM4s have been purchased, but it looks likely that the Micro T-1 will replace them. The US Army went to an Elcan sight, the M145 for its M249 and M240 machine guns, giving everyone in the squad an optical sight.

The USMC adopted a different approach and never gave up on long range rifle fire, despite being stuck with the M16A1. The traditionalists in the USMC establishment pushed hard for the adoption of a heavy barrelled M16 with a tight twist and backsight theoretically capable of 800 meter engagements. This was of dubious military utility due to the near impossibility of identifying a target without magnification at that distance, but accurate long range rifle fire was a big part of the ethos where every member was a rifleman first and a specialist second. The Marines are still (as of 2010) without a standard issue close combat sight. They instead tried out the TA31 4X32 ACOG and standardized two variants of this sight with reticles matched to the M16A4 and M4 respectively as their RCO (Rifle Combat Optic). These are type classified as the AN/PVQ-31A and AN/PVQ-31B. The M150 is the US Army version of the TA31RCO, also ballistically matched to the 20" barrelled M16A4. This is now being fitted with an L3 (Eotech) Miniature Reflex Sight or MRS in a piggyback mount (some units having previously used Docter or Trijicon RMR reflex sights piggybacked on ACOGs). The US Marines went with TA-11 3.5X 35 ACOG variants, rather than ELCANs for their M27, M249 and M240 machine guns.
